How to be prepared for exams | the final battle | how to study for exams

Although it is almost guaranteed that a well-prepared student will pass well, it may take more than preparedness to score distinctions. This is because well-prepared students may not produce their best work under the stressful conditions of an examination. In this chapter, I will be pointing out some of the most common mistakes that students make under examination pressure. We will also look at precautions you can take to ensure that you give your best, on this all-important day.

PUT YOURSELF IN AN EMPOWERING STATE

If you have gone through all the steps of the study process and are well prepared, the only thing that could spoil your chances of getting your ‘A’ is being in the wrong state of mind. If you are in a lousy state such as anxiety, depression or nervousness, you could end up ‘going blank’ or making lots
of careless mistakes. So the first thing you need to do is to put yourself in the most empowering state In An Instant. Remember that your state of mind will affect how you feel. How you feel will affect your actions and your results. When you are in a state feeling absolutely confident, excited and empowered, you are going to produce your very best. Here are a few things you can do!

1.ARRIVE EARLY TO GET RELAXED

It is always good to arrive early for an examination. Firstly, it guarantees that you will not be late for the paper and secondly, being early allows your mind to relax before it is put to work. Remember that your mind performs at its
best when you are in a relaxed state.

  2. GET YOUR MIND OFF THE EXAM

It will definitely help if you could chat with your friends about anything that could take your mind off studying, but never talk about the examination or the study material. Most of all, never ever study on the day of the examination. This is the best way to sabotage your mind. Doing so will put  you in a more tense state and the new material will only confuse you and interfere with any information that your mind has so well sorted out and integrated during your sleep.

3. USE THE POWER OF WORDS

Never allow that voice inside your head to say things like ‘I’m nervous’, ‘I’m dead’, ‘I hope it is not too difficult’, ‘Oh no!’ Instead, do what world champion boxers do. Keep telling yourself, ‘I’m getting my A’, ‘This is easy’, ‘I can do it’, ‘No problem’. Even when you fi nd yourself stumped by many difficult questions, never allow yourself to talk negatively. Once you get into a lousy state, it will be all over. So, keep talking positive.

4. PUT YOURSELF IN AN EMPOWERING STATE

Before the exam, get yourself into an empowering state by thinking about a time in the past when you felt totally confident, unstoppable and powerful. See that picture clearly in your mind and make that image big and bright. Make sure  you are fully associated with that picture and  that it is in color. Next, make sure you are in an empowering physiology. Breathe the way you would be breathing if you were totally confident. Put that determined look on your face. Throw your shoulders back and walk as if you were unstoppable.
You can use the power of anchoring you learnt to trigger an empowered state. Listen to great music  just before the exam. Put the power moves that you have developed (like pumping
your fists in the air or snapping your fingers and shouting ‘Yes!’) into action. Once you are at the peak of your empowered state, you can begin to tackle the paper.
